Frequently Asked Questions

JOINING

How do I join?

All you need to do is come along to a rehearsal to see what we’re about and say hello. Just drop us an e-mail at hello@singchoirnottingham.co.uk to let us know you’re coming. You first week is free and if you want to join us, we can give you a membership form.

Do I need to audition?

Nope! We’re very friendly and encourage everyone to join in without needing auditions. We do split into vocal sections (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass), so you’ll need to know roughly which one you’re suited to.

Can I come on my own? Can I bring a friend?

Many people come by themselves, as we’re a friendly bunch and it won’t be long until you make a new friend! Having said that, any friends you want to bring are welcome too…the more the merrier!

What is the age limit?

Our minimum age is 18, however, we are happy to accept 14-17-year-olds provided they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. This also includes any performances and other activities outside of rehearsals.

What sort of songs do you sing? How many songs do we learn each term?

We do a variety of music, and each term we have some sort of theme. We try to have a mix of songs that people know, as well as lots of pieces that people don’t as we love teaching everybody about new music!

Each term we will learn roughly 5 pieces, maybe a few more!

Do I need to be able to read music?

Partly…but don’t panic! We learn all our music from scores that are provided free of charge. Many members can read music but there are plenty who don’t, and part of the fun of SiNG choir is learning how to read music as you go along. Don’t worry if you can’t read music, you’ll quickly pick it up!

Are there any parts or harmonies to learn?

Oh yes, we love harmonies! Every piece we do is split SAB (Soprano, Alto, Bass), but occasionally we’ll split the men and have SATB. Sometimes our pieces will require some solos or a small group of singers.

Will singing improve my health?

Absolutely. Physically, mentally and socially! The positive effects of singing are proven and can be felt in so many areas. Many of our members treat rehearsals as their “escape” from everyday lives and use it to forget their outside stresses and worries.

Singing releases feel good hormones, boosts immunity, improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, improves breathing and overall well-being, including social bonding.

The only way your health might be at risk is the amount of cake we get through each rehearsal!

Where and when do the groups meet?

We rehearse every Sunday nights (term time only) 7:00pm – 9:00pm (9:30pm closer to concerts) at the Wollaton Park Community Centre, Harrow Road, Wollaton, NG8 1FG.

Do I have to be able to sing in order to join?

We believe that everyone can sing! It would be great if you had some experience in singing, but it’s not necessary! If you just enjoy singing and want to get better at it and boost your confidence then you should definitely join us!

PAYMENT

How much is SiNG Choir?

Fees are £25 per 5 week half term (£50 per 10 week term). This is due half termly in advance and can be paid by either cash or card at rehearsals, or via BACS. There is also a joining fee of £30 which includes a t-shirt and a choir folder!

Your first week is free and will be charged for the remainder of the half term.

What do the fees cover?

The fees cover the hire of the rehearsal hall, the choir leader, hiring performance venues, buying music and backing tracks and other administrative costs of running the choir.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes, we can offer a discount to students, OAPS (over 65) and two or more family members who pay together. This is £20 per half term.

Will I get a refund if I don’t attend all the sessions?

Unfortunately, no. Any refunds will be down to the discretion of the choir leader. If a rehearsal has been cancelled unexpectedly, we will try and make up the additional time to you, but this is not always possible.

How do I access harmony parts and backing tracks?

We will publish an online link to all members where they can access scores and recordings.

CLOTHING

Where do I buy clothing?

Clothing can be ordered and paid for in rehearsals.

Do you have facilities and access for disabled members?

Yep! Our rehearsal venue is very accessible for disabled members. We try to make sure that all our performance venues are too!

CHOIR PERFORMANCES

Do I have to pay to be part of the performances/event?

Nope, all our performances are included in the fees. Sometimes when we organise our own events we heavily rely on the ticket sales to make them financially viable, so we really appreciate your support in selling tickets!

Do I have to take part in performances?

Nope, but we do actively encourage you to do so! We try to publish dates as early as possible to make sure everyone is available, but we don’t make performing compulsory if you don’t want to.

How do I cancel my membership?

If you no longer wish to continue with the choir, we require written notice to cancel your membership.
